Affordable Learning Exchange

Timeline

Spring 2016 – Autumn 2019

Summary

The Affordable Learning Exchange at The Ohio State University offers grants to support faculty in replacing traditional textbooks with high-quality open educational resources and library materials. Colleagues in the University Libraries, Office of Distance Education and eLearning, and other teaching-oriented units combine their resources to help faculty successfully create or adopt no-cost or low-cost course materials. Our multi-year, mixed-methods study explored this observation in a more critical and rigorous way through interviews with two faculty cohorts who adopted Affordable Learning Exchange-funded open educational resources. Interviews included questions about if and how the adoption of open educational resources encouraged changes in courses’ breadth or depth of coverage, proportion of time spent on different activities (e.g., lecture versus group work versus discussion), and number or types of assessments.
